Welcome to the Curriculum page

Welcome to the secondary curriculum reform page

The purpose of this page is to provide staff with a list of current documentation that can be used to inform curriculum planning. Secondary curriculum reform aims to enable all young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. The documentation will support the dialogue on how all learning is organised and assessed.

Future Schools - November 2009

Future schools aims to share the experiences and expertise of schools in areas as diverse as a complete new build through BSF to the workforce and resource implications of the extended schools agenda. The issues surrounding reimaginging schooling are complex but challenge us all to go back to the heart of what constitutes effective teaching and learning.

We will work with schools in the coming year to create a systematic means of capturing the wisdom and insights of those colleagues who specialise in 'outside the box' thinking, those who have been through a rebuild programme and also to look into future needs and possibilities - be these technological, environmental or staff related. You child, your schools, our future - building a 21st century schools system - October 2009

Every parent wants their child to go to a great school, and every young person deserves a great education. That is why improving school standards is one of the proudest achievements of this Government. Many more young people leave primary school secure in the basics, achieve good qualifications in secondary school, and stay on in education and training than a decade ago. The 11-19 curriculum - From implementation to development - September 2009

The new secondary curriculum was introduced in September 2008 as part of major reforms of 11–19 education and qualifications. With the implementation phase well underway, it’s now time to ensure the changes are secure and that they make a difference for learners. We need to make certain that all young people are more deeply motivated and inspired to engage with learning. They should make good progress and achieve the standards they need to give them the best chance of success in adult life.

This publication outlines evidence of the changes made and their impact so far. It sets out the next steps for the reforms as we secure their expected impact for schools, teachers and learners. It contains valuable support and links to the guidance that are available from the QCDA and other implementation partners. Please click here to download the document

Planning for change: the impact of the new Key Stage 3 curriculum

This report evaluates the progress being made in implementing the new Key Stage 3 curriculum, based on visits to 37 schools between May 2008 and March 2009. The schools in the survey had embraced the opportunity to introduce more variety into teaching and learning to engage and motivate students. They had made less progress in linking subjects and incorporating skills across the curriculum, although there were examples of good and outstanding practice in these areas. National Dimensions Conference - 12 March 2009

The National Conference for Dimensions held at the Congress Centre raised the profile of dimensions for curriculum planning for secondary schools. Over 200 delegates attended the conference from across the country and across the world. Launching the two new publications, Cross-curriculum dimensions and Sustainable development in action, David Gardner from QCA said "these publications have been developed to support schools develop a curriculum that is coherent to the learner, lets all work together to engage schools with the potential of cross-curriculum dimensions to develop a modern world class curriculum to inspire and challenge all learners and prepare them for the future."

The Prime Minister's Global Fellows, Luke Pollard and Sophie Jones highlighted the potential in developing successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens ,as did the students from Mayfield School in Essex, their report on the conference is now live on BBC News School Report website. Schools Minister announces statutory PSHE - 23 October 2008

SRE Press Release

All pupils to get healthy lifestyle lessons - Government accepts recommendations of sex and drugs reviews

DCSF has today published: the report by the group that was established to review the delivery of Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) in schools; and the Government response to the group's report. Copies of both reports, as well as press notices released by the SRE review Steering group and DCSF are attached. Copies of both reports are attached along with Press notices from the SRE Review Group and the Government in response.

The review was announced in the Children’s Plan, in December 2007. The steering group that undertook the review was comprised of: practitioners involved in the planning and delivery of SRE; experts in young people’s sexual health; representatives of faith groups; and young people. The review was co-chaired by Schools Minister Jim Knight, Jackie Fisher, Principal of Newcastle College and Josh McTaggart, a member of the UK Youth Parliament. The group’s independent report includes a number of recommendations to Government, designed to improve the quality and consistency of SRE in schools, to which the Government has responded.

The steering group’s headline recommendation is that PSHE should be made statutory and be supported by a statutory programme of study (PoS) – in order to give it increased status/priority in schools. The Government has accepted the arguments for statutory PSHE and agreed to undertake a review – headed by Sir Alasdair MacDonald – to consider how to turn the decision that PSHE should have statutory status into a practicable way forward. In addition, the Government will accept, or agree to consider further, all of the steering group’s other recommendations, designed to improve the delivery of SRE. Recommendations broadly fall into 6 headings:

  • Those designed to improve the skills and confidence of those who deliver SRE – the key delivery challenge;
  • Those designed to encourage greater use of external professionals and agencies to support schools’ delivery of SRE;
  • Those that address the need for more guidance and support on how best to deliver SRE;
  • Those designed to increase young people’s opportunities to influence the design of their SRE programmes;
  • Those aimed at maximising the impact of wider Government programmes on the quality and consistency of SRE; and
  • Those designed to improve leadership on SRE, in terms of both school leadership teams and strategic oversight by Local Authorities and PCTs.

The report also considered how best to ensure that schools and parents could work in partnership to educate children and young people about sex and relationships.

Leading curriculum design and change: local events for curriculum designers

From January 2008, SSAT lead practitioners will be supporting the process of curriculum change through a local programme of events and activities. The programme recognises that schools will be at different starting points with a different planned rate of progress towards a curriculum that gives each learner a personalised route through the new 11–19 landscape.

Lead practitioners will not be offering off-the-peg solutions to the challenges offered by the new curriculum but will support the process of disciplined innovation, enabling each institution to develop a curriculum that reflects its learners’ needs.

Experienced and aspiring curriculum designers will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend half-day/twilight workshops led by SSAT lead practitioners
  • Receive personal support from SSAT lead practitioners
  • Participate in an online community of curriculum designers through the SSAT e-portal

All secondary schools (including middle and special schools and academies) in England have been allocated a lead practitioner to work with them. They will have received an invitation to join a local learning group of fellow schools, as well as notification of the dates of their local events and how to register attendance.

If you are able to forward this email onto your networks of schools then that would be greatly appreciated. The easiest way to register for your free place at one of the workshops is online.

Simply go to https://secure2.symphonyem.co.uk/curriculum%5Fchange/ and pick which region you are in then click on register.

If you have any questions regarding the workshops, or for details of your assigned workshops, please contact the workshop helpline on 0845 363 1478, or email to curriculumchange@rslive.co.uk.

Choice and Design: The New Curriculum for 11-19 year olds

A number of questions and comments about the reform programme were raised through workshop sessions and interactive technology used at conferences, covering Diplomas, functional skills, New Secondary Curriculum and delivery issues such as collaboration, workforce issues and funding. Please click here for responses to these questions.

If you want to keep up to date with developments across 11-19 reform you can sign up to the Delivery '08, Planning for Delivery '09 and 14-19 Implementation Update newsletters. To subscribe to these newsletters, please click here.

The 14-19 website also gives a flavour of the main sessions from the conferences - you'll be able to read Jim Knight's keynote speech and download the slides from the workshop sessions. Please click here
