Welcome to the Building Schools for the Future page

What is Building Schools for the Future?

The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme is a government initiative aiming to promote a change in the quality of the nation's educational provision.

The programme is projected to spend £2.2 billion per year on building and refurbishing all maintained secondary schools in England over the next 10-15 years. The idea is to create world class, flexible and adaptable teaching and learning environments compatible with the 21st century.

The programme is the biggest investment in education for over fifty years and comes at an ideal time. The world is changing and, in the 21st century, people will need to be increasingly flexible, technology-aware, with a very different skill-set from their forebears.

BSF, therefore, present an ideal opportunity to rethink how education is delivered in schools and how to ensure that the right facilities, environment and opportunities are present to allow secondary school pupils to reach their full potential. This draws on recent high-profile studies that have shown how innovative building and classroom design impact on the effectiveness and experience of learners, teachers and the wider community of users.

Schools - curriculum and design innovations

A new website which showcases examples of innovative school design from around the world has been launched to inspire students, teachers and architects involved in the Building Schools for the Future and other school renewal programmes.

Imagine – www.imagineschooldesign.org - showcases examples of innovative school, college and university design from around the world. We hope that that this easily accessible tool will be used by students, teachers as well as by the BSF community, to find out more about good practice both nationally and internationally. Each case study includes colour photos as well as plan and links to further articles about the design, and also a checklist with details of the client, architect, size of the school, number of students and cost. How will the programme be delivered?

Newham has an excellent track record of delivering high quality; complex and far reaching projects aimed at raising educational standards through capital investment.

The council will work in partnership with all stakeholders to deliver a programme that is focused on improving educational outcomes rather than simply renovation of buildings. A key element of this is the creation of a Local Educational Partnership (LEP) which will be set up as a joint venture company comprising the London Borough of Newham, Partnerships for Schools (PfS) and a private sector partner. PfS is the body set up by the government to deliver BSF. The LEP will be responsible for delivering the design and refurbishment or, in the case of some schools, rebuild to provide the new educational facilities funded by the BSF scheme. Four schools will be rebuilt and these will be financed through a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract.
